Skin anatomy
The skin is the human body’s biggest organ, and performs many
important functions:
It helps regulate body temperature. Bacterial colonies on its surface form part of the immune system.
The skin is one of the most important organs of elimination sweating out minerals and waste products from the body.
It acts as an environmental barrier – preventing our water-rich bodies from drying out. The skin is the body’s largest sensory organ and its sensory nerve receptors detect a number of different stimuli: mechanical, such as pressure or stretching; and thermal, in terms of heat and cold.
Layer of skin
The skin is roughly divided into 3 layers:
- The Epidermis (the outer and top layer)
- The Dermis (the deeper layer)
- The Hypodermis (Subcutaneous Tissues)
